DAY #11
Last full day in these parts of the woods and a nice clear, warm day it was. I started the day looking to replace my reservation at Three Rivers State Park in Florida which had been cancelled due to damage from Hurricane Michael. I was a bit concerned that with all the damage to the parks because of Michael, a lot more campers would be scrambling to find new reservations just like me. A few spots west, east and north of the path of Michael that I checked and that fit my schedule and course were all closed due to damage. I was able to find a site in Opp, Alabama (Frank Jackson State Park) that fit my needs so I gave them a call and while expecting to hear, sorry we’re full, I was able to book a reservation. It takes me a little way off the path but not enough to worry about.
Checked out the area some more and came across an ICE detention center. Not a big center but lined with concertina wire and formidable looking just the same. I was going to take a couple of photos but then thought, maybe better not, and so I didn’t.
I don’t know if locking people up like this is the right direction to go. The vast majority of the people coming across the border are doing so, not for welfare and a free ride, but rather, to find jobs (that we don’t want to do) to support themselves and their family’s back home. I do agree that we need controls but to put people in prison (and while this was a small center, it looked every bit like a prison) for trying to make a better life seems to me to be the wrong way to deal with this issue. I’m not sure what the answer is, I just don’t think this is it. OK, enough on the liberal soapbox. One last political tinged story. While heading back to the campsite I saw a small political sign way up on a power pole that said; Trump. What was so impacting about this little sign was its location deep in the woods on a windy, narrow two lane road.
I found my way back to the campsite and nestled in for the night because come tomorrow, it’s on the road again (sing it Willie).
To have spent the last five days in this park with it pretty much to myself does make it a bit special, like it was there just for me, and I’ve enjoyed every moment of it.

Here I am in Southern Arkansas. the park is just off the road so getting in was quick and easy, which was nice. Really quiet in the park, just a handful of other campers. It does make it convenient with so few people especially when you want to use the bathroom or take a shower (no, no water in the trailer yet, I don’t know why I’m dragging my feet). Had not slept very well up to this point and with the misty, overcast, and cool weather, I finally was able to get some sleep. Some sleep, geez, it was most of the day. Did go into Ashdown later in the afternoon to visit the local Wal-Mart and checked the town out a little bit. Sadly, another small town where time has moved on. (no pictures? ugh!).

Today didn’t start out that great. Another cool but clear morning. It was neat (am I dating myself?) to see the stream coming off the water. After putting everything in its place and getting the trailer hooked up, I took one last look around my lake front camp site and off I went. It was a really tight turn out of the campsite and also uphill. I turned it as sharp as I could (I did not want to have to back the trailer going down hill in a really tight space) and in the process scraped something on the passenger side of the truck. I thought man, that’s not good. I got out and checked and saw the damage was limited to the hook being scratched, not that big of a deal. Still it kind of freaks me when my stuff isn’t all shiny and new. Maybe one thing I can learn from this journey is to not sweat the small stuff and if you don’t, it’s OK.
Around four in the afternoon reached the next destination, Millwood State Park, which is approx. nine miles outside of Ashdown, Arkansas.

It’s located in the town square and it’s still open for business.
After walking around the square and taking photos of the store, it was time to head back to the campsite. I was about to open my truck door I glance down and there was a small wad of money. I picked it up and counted it ($35.00), looked around and saw no one. I stayed in the truck for about ten minutes to see if anyone came back and no one did so thanks Arkansas, I do appreciate it. I guess this is my version of winning the lottery since I am not lucky.

Unfortunately, it was burned (for the second time) in early 2017 by a jilted lover. I believe it’s beginning to be rebuilt. In checking it looks like I forgot one of the bridges. Oops, I’ll have to get it next time.

After a lovely sunset over Lake Osakis the night before, the morning began warm (for this fall) and clear, a perfect send off to start the trip. I locked up the house, hooked up the trailer to the truck and at 8:20, hit the road, beginning the long trip.
